Elizabeth’s Elders

Our McClarney Lineage

Today I’m posting our McClarney lineage from the early 1700s (in the coastal NC area) into the mid-1700s (in VA), then back down into the Caswell Co area of NC in the mid-to-late 1700s.  There they stayed until about the mid-1800s, at which point our branch of the family migrated into TN.

While we went to TN, other branches of the McClarney family had moved on to KY, OK, MO, etc.  The lineage I’m posting today contains information on some of our common ancestors, but after that it focuses primarily on the TN line of James McClarney, b. 1794 in NC, and his son James Henry McClarney, b. 1850 in NC/TN.

Note that while there was a big age discrepancy between James & James Henry, a note from my Great-grandfather George Henry McClarney “backs up” this father-son relationship.  Likewise, so does the census of 1850 McMinn Co TN - James appears to have had a much-younger wife then named Isabella, along with some young children.  Whether or not James had any previous wives is unknown.

The lineage below is my family’s direct line only; there are many other lines.  Later I plan to post a GEDCOM that contains a few more McClarney descendants, mainly to serve as a starting point for other researchers to see how we all relate to each other.  I’m not researching the other McClarney lines or doing a “McClarney Website” per se, due to time constraints.  However, I’m still looking for information on the “Two William McClarneys” mentioned in an earlier entry, along with information on our Scots-Irish origins.

1. William McClarney

Birth:est 1720

Death:est 1789

Father:Unknown McClarney

Mother:Unknown Unknown

1737 - Thomas McClarney received a 200 acre land grant in New Hanover in 1737 as Irish flax farmers and other farmers were being encouraged to settle in that county.

1741 - WILLIAM McCLARNEY, soldier in “Gooch’s American Regiment” a.k.a. “Gooch’s Marines” HMS Montague.

NOTE 1: "Gooch's Marines", named after their leader Virginia Governor Colonel William Gooch, were unopposed in securing Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in July 1741 as a British fleet base.  In April 1741 they were involved in a battle at Cartagena, Colombia.  Of the 3000 Marines who fought in Gooch’s campaigns, only 10% survived due to high levels of disease.

1747 - WILLIAM McCLARNEY, Muster Roll #35, Private, New Topsail Company.  Commanded by Capt. John Ashe, NC Militia.   (Thomas McClarney also served, Muster Roll #21, Private).

’Colonial Soldiers of the South 1732-1774’

1749 - CAPT. WILLIAM McCLARNY commanded a company of 44 men, Somerset Co., MD, Mar 24 1749, MHR Box 1:17.

McCLARNY, WILLIAM  1 - - - (columns are: white men, negro men, negro women, negro boys)

McClarny, Thomas 5 2 1 - (columns are: white men, negro men, negro women, negro boys)

NOTE 2: When researching the New Hanover Co records, care must be taken to differentiate Thomas & William McClarney from the sizeable McClammy/McClamy families of the same county; their family also included a Thomas & a William.  McClarny looks very much like McClamy in an old-style longhand, which is what was used on the original records.

NOTE 3:  I am uncertain as to William’s relationship to Thomas.  Wm had considerably fewer people in his household in 1762 than Thomas.  Perhaps Wm was Thomas’ brother, which is possible if the old family story of 3 brothers immigrating to the US from Ireland is true.  By estimating their ages from property records, both Wm and Thomas appear to be older than Paul by as much as a generation.

1789 McCLARNEY, WILLIAM  (file is marked “may be two estates” by archivists as is appears that two different Caswell Co. William McClarneys had two different McClarney administrators appointed - Paul in 1789, Henry in 1798).

My note: if my theory is correct, where was Wm from 1762-1789?  Paul bought land in Spotsylvania Co VA in 1762, was Wm there too?

1789 McCLARNEY, WILLIAM (file is marked “may be two estates” by archivists; it appears that two different Caswell Co. William McClarneys died within 9 years of each other.  Each had a different estate administrator appointed.  The Wm who passed in ~1789 had Paul appointed as administrator, while the Wm who passed in ~1798 had Henry appointed as administrator.  I believe the first Wm was the father of Paul, while the second Wm was the son of Paul (thus grandson of the elder Wm), brother of Henry, and husband of Caty.

3. William McClarney

Birth:est 1756

Death:abt 1797-8

Take this with a grain of salt, this is a theory I’ve developed based on available evidence. William’s relationship to Paul & Rosannah - that is, he is their son - is presumed based on the following:  Caty Ferrell is mentioned as being James McClarney’s mother in Rosannah McClarney’s will of 1807 (Caswell Co, NC).  Rosannah tells us that James is her grandson, but she does not give the name of James’ father;  I am assuming that James’ father is a son of Rosannah’s who has passed on before her.  Rosannah mentions in her will that Henry McClarney is her son, but she makes no mention of other living sons.  It is assumed that Rosannah had a son in addition to Henry and that this other son was the husband of Caty Ferrell, a son who predeceased both Rose and Caty.  The name of this son is uncertain, but since William McClarney died in Caswell Co NC ~1797 and Henry was his executor and Caty came into 100 acres of land shortly after Henry won land on behalf of William’s estate, it may have been him.   This younger William may have been named for his paternal grandfather William who passed in 1789, who was the father of Paul.  Thus, it is assumed that the younger William whom we see listed in Caswell Co records until ~1797 is Caty’s husband, father of James, son of Paul, and grandson of William.   However, this needs to be researched further.

My note:  According to the NC Rev Army Accts., William had the rank of Private.  Therefore, it is assumed that this William is a younger relative, possibly the grandson, of the William McClarney who commanded a company of 44 men in the Maryland militia in 1749.   It is assumed that the elder William, who was almost age 60 at the start of the Revolution, would not have served at the rank of Private in the Revolution.  The elder William had lived in New Hanover Co NC, as did Thomas McClarney (who received a land grant there in 1737).

William had been in 10th Regiment NC, Capt. Hal Dixon’s Co.

William was discharged in 1782 with 5 years of service.  Although he was in the Continental line, it does not appear that he received a land grant.

Spouse:Caty Unknown

Birth:est 1765

Death:aft 1834

My note:  I believe that Caty Ferrell, as named in Rosannah’s 1807 will, married first into the McClarney family and had one child (James); she appears to have then married into the Ferrell family after the death of her McClarney husband.  In 1785, Caty witnessed Thomas Baxter’s will;  she was called Caty McClarney at that time.  In a land survey in 179? (with Obediah Holloway & John Baxter present), she still carried the McClarney name.   It appears she may have come into this land after Henry won land on behalf of William McClarney’s estate.  McClarney is also the same name Caty had in 1799 & 1801, according to deed books.  But, by the time Rosannah wrote her will in 1807, Caty seems to have remarried and taken the name Ferrell.  Only her son James (b. ~1794) was a McClarney; the other three were Ferrells.

Death:25 May 2000, San Antonio, Bexar Co., Texas

Father:Henry Herndon Hargrove  (1883-1972)

Mother:Ova “Mymama” Wales (1892-1963)

WWII - had been a “Rosie the Riveter.”

Owned a flower shop before birth of her grandchildren.

Went by “GG” starting in 8/1996; she chose this as her nickname when she became a great-grandmother.

Birthplace listed variously as either Veto, Alabama or Decatur, Alabama (this from info she furnished on Children’s birth certificates).  Her birth certificate is handwritten and script too flowery to be legible.

Birthplace is vague because the TN/AL state line runs through the middle of Ardmore and Veto, which are about 5 miles apart east and west.   Pettusville AL is about 2 miles south of the state line.   Prospect TN is about 2 miles north of the state line.   Picture a diamond with Ardmore on the right, Veto on the left.  One hundred years ago our family did not live in a town, but in the country in the middle of this diamond, calling where they lived whatever they wanted.  Jenny was born at Veto, but we don't  know where Mymama (Ova Wales Hargrove) and Granddaddy (Henry Herndon Hargrove) were living.   Aunt Babe just knows all the kids were born up in the country except her, she was born in Decatur.
